Social Enterprise Day: Thriving on Purpose

Article, News / 20 November 2025

November 20 marks Social Enterprise Day, a global celebration of businesses that exist to create positive change. This year’s theme, “Thriving on Purpose,” is about making the conscious decision to thrive as leaders of change and achieving real, lasting impact through our missions.

What is a Social Enterprise?

A social enterprise is a business with a purpose beyond profit. According to Social Traders, the national body for social enterprise in Australia, these organisations:

  • Have a primary social, cultural, or environmental mission that benefits the community.
  • Earn most of their income through trade, not donations.
  • Ensure that public benefit outweighs private gain.

Social enterprises operate across industries, from hospitality to facilities management, and they make a big impact. In Australia, there are over 12,000 social enterprises, contributing $21.3 billion to the economy and creating 206,000 jobs – many for people who face barriers to employment.

Why Does This Matter?

Social enterprises are a powerful way to tackle social challenges while building sustainable businesses. They don’t just talk about change, they deliver it through every transaction, every partnership, and every job created.

Intelife: A Social Enterprise with Purpose
