Our Commitment to Inclusive Communication
October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the tools and systems that support individuals with complex communication needs. At Intelife, we are proud to play a part in promoting AAC, ensuring that people with disabilities have access to the communication solutions they need to express themselves, live independently, and fully engage in their communities.
What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication?
AAC refers to a wide range of communication methods that support or replace verbal speech. These methods are designed for individuals who face challenges in spoken communication, offering alternative ways to share their thoughts, needs, and emotions. AAC is not a one-size-fits-all solution; rather, it is highly personalized to meet each individual’s unique communication needs and preferences.
AAC can be divided into two main types:
- Unaided AAC, which relies on body movements, including gestures, facial expressions, and sign language.
- Aided AAC, which involves external tools, ranging from low-tech picture boards and writing systems to high-tech devices such as speech-generating devices (SGDs) and apps like Proloquo2Go.
Why is AAC Important?
For many individuals with complex communication needs, AAC is their primary voice. It enables them to participate fully in daily life, from education to employment to social interactions. By providing a means to express their thoughts and choices, AAC empowers individuals to live more independently and feel more connected to the world around them.
At Intelife, we understand the critical role AAC plays in fostering inclusion and improving quality of life. We are committed to supporting our participants by providing the tools, guidance, and environments that make communication accessible for everyone.
As part of our broader mission to provide inclusive and empowering services, Intelife is dedicated to promoting AAC awareness and use. We are actively working to ensure that communication tools like AAC devices and picture boards are available to participants who need them. Our staff is trained to understand and respect AAC systems, recognizing them as each participant’s voice.
Here are some of the ways Intelife supports AAC:
- Creating an Inclusive Environment: Ensuring AAC tools are readily accessible for participants across all programs.
- Supporting Participants’ Use of AAC: Our team takes the time to familiarize themselves with each individual’s AAC system, allowing participants to express themselves fully and without pressure.
- Tailoring Support: We work closely with participants and their families to ensure AAC solutions are customized to meet their specific communication needs.
At Intelife, we believe in fostering independence, inclusion, and respect for all participants and are proud to support those with complex communication needs to find their voice. We are committed to providing the tools and support necessary to ensure that every participant can communicate confidently and live a more independent life.
